Distribution of Muslim Population in the United States, 2010
About This Resource
The percentage of Muslims in each U.S. county is shown in a 2010 map. Concentrations range from 5 percent in a few counties to 0 percent, reported in most counties. It should be noted, however, that the data used for this map was collected through surveys of mosques; consequently, Muslims residing in counties without mosques may not have been counted. Estimating the membership of any faith group in the United States is challenging, since census data does not record this information, and many people who identify with a particular religion do not attend houses of worship regularly. Ihsan Bagby, associate professor of Islamic studies at the University of Kentucky, has published pioneering studies of mosques and their communities with the support of the Hartford Institute for Religion Research (Hartford Seminary), the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, and the largest Islamic civic and religious groups in the United States. The map appears in The American Mosque 2011, which involved detailed study of more than 500 mosques in the United States. The full document is available on the Hartford Institute for Religion Research website.
The Muslim Journeys Bookshelf offers more information on Islam in contemporary America in books such as Eboo Patel’s memoir Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation, and The Columbia Sourcebook of Muslims in the United States, a reference edited by Edward E. Curtis IV.
